Dr. Joseph Ahn, MD
Chief Medical Mentor

Dr. Joseph C. Ahn is a staff faculty member in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic, the #1 ranked hospital in the U.S. for many years. He is a Transplant Hepatologist overseeing the care of patients requiring liver transplantation for a range of complex and advanced liver diseases.
Dr. Ahn was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to the U.S. at the age of 13. He went to middle school and high school in San Fernando Valley, California. He earned his bachelor’s degree in molecular & cell biology from UC Berkeley and his medical degree from UC San Francisco (UCSF) school of medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at Cedars-Sinai medical center in Los Angeles, where he was named the “resident of the year” twice during the three years of his training and was appointed as the chief resident in charge of the residents’ education. He subsequently joined Mayo Clinic and completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology, as well as an advanced specialization in Transplant Hepatology.
Dr. Ahn is a dedicated physician-scientist with a robust interest in clinical and translational research. He has authored more than 30 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and has written several textbook chapters in the field of liver diseases. His current research concentrates on the integration of artificial intelligence to enhance early diagnosis and predictive insights in patients with liver diseases.
Dr. Ahn is fully bilingual in English and Korean. As a 1.5 generation immigrant who has achieved the dream of becoming an academic physician at the best hospital in the U.S., Dr. Ahn is enthusiastic to guide and mentor the next generation of young Korean American physicians.
